A Logical Approach to Port Injection and GDI Drivability Concerns
Brandon Steckler
Stick with Brandon Steckler as he takes you through a logical approach solving seemingly difficult driveability symptoms. The course objective is to first take the novice driveability-tech and offer insight as to how fuel injection strategy functions. After thorough discussion of what critical inputs are necessary and how they contribute to the decision of the proper fuel injector pulse-width, interactive class exercises will begin. Using a vehicle with a MAF fueling strategy , a series of experiments were conducted to create a low-power driveability fault. The faults include: -exhaust restriction -Air Filter restriction -Fuel restriction -un-metered air before throttle plate -un-metered air after throttle (vacuum) The scan data will be presented in graphed format , for “action/reaction” comparison , as well as in a format featured only by certain scan tools. The goal of the class is to have the attendees analyze the data and decipher which fault is responsible for the data being viewed at that time. Attendees will leave with an understanding of fuel injection strategy, fuel feedback control and the ability to use generic scan tool data to make preliminary decisions about diagnostic-direction, right from the driver's seat. After that, the course will transition into an approach to GDI system driveability faults and how they differ from that of port injection. Delivered in an easily-digestible format, the class is designed to be highly interactive and technicians of all skill levels will benefit from it!

This is an interactive class. It is intended to be a discussion about the things we do not know. Any individual working in the transportation business is learning new things. The normal course of our days should be exposing us to these things daily in many ways. It does not matter if we are in the front or back of the shop, the need to learn and grow is one of the appealing realities of this career for many. If you want to learn the secret to becoming an upper-echelon technician, this is a highly recommended path. It is not an easy button class or silver bullets. It is not a “look what I can do” class. It is a discussion about the pursuit of excellence. Bryan and Jim openly admit that they do not know everything. The more they learn, the more they realize how much there is to learn. This class is built around real examples of vehicle repair processes and the need to find and apply knowledge to solve the puzzle. It will also provide strategies for improving problem-solving skills and information about the reality of how we learn. Some myths may also be shattered. If you would like to participate in a discussion where audience participation is encouraged, there will be opportunities to network with others and learn from each other. Bryan and Jim look forward to speaking with you in class.

The Power of PMA: Positive Mental Attitude
Lowell Greene
What is Positive Mental Attitude (PMA)? Definition and Key Traits: Positive Mental Attitude, often just called “positive attitude”, isn’t about wearing rose-colored glasses or ignoring problems. It’s a mindset of optimism, resilience, and proactive problem-solving. The term PMA was popularized by success thinkers like Napoleon Hill back in the 1930s. Hill (along with W. Clement Stone) described PMA as an attitude embodying qualities like faith, integrity, hope, optimism, courage, initiative, and generosity (Positive mental attitude - Wikipedia). In plain terms, it means believing you can find a desirable outcome no matter the circumstance, and continuously looking for ways to win or learn instead of ways to lose (Positive mental attitude - Wikipedia). It’s the opposite of falling into negativity, defeatism, or hopelessness. For us in the automotive world, PMA translates to finding joy in solving problems and staying confident under the hood. It’s that inner voice that says “I can figure this out” when you’re faced with a bizarre engine problem, instead of “This is impossible, I give up.” It’s approaching a tricky repair with curiosity and determination rather than dread. A technician with PMA keeps seeking the solution – testing, learning, asking for help if needed – whereas a negative mindset might throw up hands and blame the car or the tools. How PMA Works: Psychologically, a positive attitude frames challenges as opportunities. When something goes wrong, PMA helps you ask, “Alright, what can I try next?” rather than “Why does this always happen to me?”. This shift in thinking keeps you engaged and mentally flexible. Research in performance psychology backs this up: for example, a study of Major League Baseball players found that what separated the top performers wasn’t just physical skill – it was mental factors like staying positive, handling failure well, and using positive self-talk (Positive mental attitude - Wikipedia). If elite athletes credit attitude for their edge, you can bet the same is true in a repair bay. A high-pressure technical environment like an auto shop is in many ways similar to sports – things move fast, pressure is high, and teamwork matters. In these settings, PMA is like a tool in your toolbox: it helps you persist through the tough jobs and bounce back from setbacks. Why It Matters in the Shop: In a busy workshop, attitude is contagious. One person’s negativity can bring down the whole team, while one person’s positivity can lift it up. Think about days when the entire shop is stressed – maybe dozens of tickets piling up, customers complaining, parts not arriving. It’s easy for the mood to turn toxic. But a tech with PMA in that storm will be the one who says, “Alright, let’s tackle one thing at a time,” and maybe even cracks a joke to ease tension. That mindset not only helps them cope, it can set an example for others. As one industry article put it, “A positive mental attitude plays a bigger part in the workshop dynamic than most would believe… A positive mindset delivers positive results while a negative mindset delivers – you guessed it – negative results.” (How to handle complicated jobs) In other words, if you walk into a complicated job expecting failure, you’re more likely to fail – but if you approach it with a can-do attitude, you vastly improve your chances of success (How to handle complicated jobs). Let’s be clear: PMA isn’t about ignoring real problems or pain. It’s not naive “happy talk” or “toxic positivity” where you just tell everyone “cheer up” without addressing issues. (In fact, blindly pretending everything is fine can be counterproductive (How important is a positive mindset, really? | Well actually | The Guardian).) Rather, PMA is about acknowledging challenges honestly, yet choosing to focus on solutions and what can be done. Studies have shown that an optimistic mindset – a key part of PMA – is linked to better stress management and health outcomes (How important is a positive mindset, really? | Well actually | The Guardian). When under the hood, this means optimism helps you handle the stress of a tough repair more effectively: you’re less likely to freeze up or make careless mistakes out of panic. You stay calmer and think clearer. To sum up, Positive Mental Attitude in our context means staying upbeat, solution-focused, and resilient no matter how many curveballs the day throws at you. It’s believing that there’s always a way forward and that you have some control over the situation by controlling your own response. And as we’ve all seen, the tech with the positive outlook often ends up finding the fix, whereas the one who mentally gives up… well, they usually end up proving themselves right that it couldn’t be done.

Empowering Technicians with Essential Soft Skills
Chris Craig
Technicians in modern industry are facing significant challenges retaining talent, with many opting to leave for opportunities in other sectors. Specializing in various domains like HVAC, electrical, and maintenance procedures, these technicians possess a diverse skill set, including in-depth mechanical expertise. This versatility enables them to transition seamlessly into alternative industries, focusing solely on specific areas like HVAC, potentially enjoying improved benefits, working hours, and pay scales. Consequently, the question arises: what incentives exist to retain technicians within the automotive sector? While considerable emphasis is placed on nurturing "soft skills" among customer-facing staff, the same attention is not always afforded to technicians. Contrary to popular belief, technicians' responsibilities extend beyond vehicle repairs. They engage in intricate documentation, articulate detailed diagnoses and solutions to advisors, and furnish comprehensive parts lists to associates. Moreover, some technicians are tasked with producing instructional videos for clients, necessitating proficient customer service abilities such as effective communication and active listening. Soft skills encompass a range of competencies crucial for sustained professional success, including communication, active listening, meticulous documentation, time management, adaptability to change, professionalism, and a proactive attitude towards learning and work. Cultivating these attributes is imperative for technicians to thrive in their roles and remain competitive in the industry. To validate the significance of these soft skills among technicians, a comprehensive survey was conducted following interviews with 11 industry experts. The survey amassed responses from 804 industry professionals, predominantly comprising technicians, followed by service advisors, managers, and general managers. The findings from the survey underscore a pronounced need among technicians for skill enhancement, particularly in the realms of attitude and behavior. Thus, investing in training initiatives centered on fostering positive attitudes towards learning and work, enhancing thoroughness, adeptness in managing change and time, proficient documentation practices, and upholding professionalism, could empower technicians to transcend the technical minutiae of their roles. Such development initiatives are pivotal for nurturing a more resilient career trajectory and bolstering retention rates within the automotive industry.
